What is this medication for?
Chlorpropamide belongs to the class of medications called oral hypoglycemics. It is also known as a sulfonylurea agent. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve control of blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It is used when diet, exercise, and weight loss cannot control blood sugar well enough on their own. It works by stimulating the release of insulin, which lowers blood sugar.
Having good control blood glucose levels is the key to reducing the risk of complications of diabetes (e.g., kidney disease, eye problems, nerve problems).
