What is this medication for?
Glipizide extended release belongs to the family of medications known as sulfonylureas. Along with diet and exercise, it is used to lower blood glucose (sugar) for people with type 2 diabetes. Antidiabetes medications such as glipizide extended release are used when diet, exercise, and weight reduction have not been found to lower blood glucose well enough on their own.
Glipizide extended release increases the release of insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows sugar to enter into cells where it is needed for energy) and helps the body use insulin more efficiently.
This medication should be used as part of an overall diabetes management plan that includes a diet and exercise program.
