What is this medication for?
This is a combination medication that contains 2 active ingredients: metformin and glyburide. They are used together, along with diet and exercise, to lower blood glucose (sugar) levels for adults with type 2 diabetes. Antidiabetes medications such as metformin and glyburide are used when diet, exercise, and weight reduction have not been found to lower blood glucose well enough on their own.
Metformin belongs to the group of medications called biguanides. It works by reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver and by making it easier for glucose to enter into the tissues of the body.
Glyburide belongs to the family of medications known as sulfonylureas. It increases the release of insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows sugar to enter into cells where it is needed for energy) and helps the body use insulin more efficiently.
